Having graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1954, Jack B. Walters embarked on a 28-year career at The Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., culminating as Plant Manager in Des Moines in 1982. Subsequently, they served as Director of General Services in Governor Terry Branstad’s administration for eight years, resigning in 1991 after the sudden death of their wife. Noteworthy projects include overseeing the construction of a $25 million Historical and Library Building and leading the exterior restoration of 35% of the State Capitol Building.
Retiring to Tucson 20 years ago, Jack became an avid outdoor enthusiast, achieving hiking milestones, including completing 315 peaks within 75 miles of Tucson before turning 70. Subsequently, he reached the new club goal of 400 peaks within 100 miles by their 80th birthday in 2008. Notably, he attained the feat of climbing 1,000 peaks by November 2, 2009, contributing significantly by leading others.
Regrettably, due to physical limitations, Jack can no longer hike and have shifted to walking around his neighborhood for exercise. His passion for golf, once a significant part of his life, has dwindled, and he has donated his equipment to benefit children. The journey into writing commenced in March 2003 with the purchase of his first computer.
